【2022】APABI_February

Dear APABI members:

This is the time of year for the annual Davos summit. This year focused first on the issue of vaccination, which is an issue of concern for countries around the world - even if not domestically, then from a global perspective, due to the possibility of future variants. The economic recovery, meanwhile, has been "stronger than expected," according to Christine Lagarde of the ECB, and we hope this can be maintained, particularly in the face of geopolitical risks. At the same time, the green transition is receiving ever more attention. It, alongside the ongoing digital transition, will reshape the future of growth and investment. A link to further relevant topics from Davos is included below.

Asian countries are taking different approaches to innovative finance, most notably cryptocurrencies. Singapore is one of the Asian countries most open to it, while many others are waiting on the sidelines to observe the full effects. Which approach is more reasonable? Further coverage from our Taiwan Banker magazine is also included.

Make sure to also check out further analysis and commentary from our members in Malaysia, Bangladesh, and other countries below. As always, feel free to submit any of your own resources for inclusion in future newsletters.

 Regards,
 Hank C.C. Huang

Davos Agenda 2022
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that no institution or individual alone can address the economic, environmental, social and technological challenges of our complex, interdependent world. The time to rebuild trust and to make crucial choices is fast approaching as the need to reset priorities and the urgency to reform systems grow stronger around the world.

WFH and Productivity
The jury is still out on the productivity benefits, if any, of Working from Home (“WFH”). A 2020 Australian survey of employers and employees found that most respondents considered productivity to be “about the same”, with employers slightly more skeptical (Productivity Commission Report, 2021)....

Asia's growth consolidating in 2022 but with major risks
After a fast technical rebound in the first half 2021, Asia GDP growth quickly sagged in the second half of the year, as Covid-related suppression measures were tightened and supply chain constrains continued to bite. The power crunch in China and the several defaults of real estate developers and the forced deleveraging also pushed down growth in China, with reverberations for the Asian region.

Singapore is the only Asian tiger with an appetite for crypto
Since the rise of the four Asian tiger economies more than half a century ago, Taiwan and South Korea have evolved into export powerhouses while Hong Kong and Singapore have become major financial centers. With their importance to global capital flows, the erstwhile British Crown Colonies were initially both poised to become cryptocurrency hubs.
