【2022】APABI_December
Dear APABI members: 2022 was a year of challenges and opportunities. The pandemic recovery continued in most countries. Taiwan and China, two of the longest holdouts, abandoned the zero COVID policies they had upheld for two years. At the same time, central banks are now hoping to mop up the excess liquidity from that period, which has already caused debt crises in the Asia Pacific region, and even the UK. The war on Ukraine has reminded us that geopolitical risk is never far from mind, and the unprecedented sanctions in response have reshaped global banking. Climate change c...

Dear APABI members: TABF was truly honored to participate in the 2022 APABI Conference & Meeting in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, hosted by the Banking and Finance Association. We had the opportunity to learn about Mongolia’s banking sector, the expectations of a new generation of banking staff, and customer service in a remote era. In terms of concrete results, the meeting decided to add biannual remote forums in the years between meetings, helping members stay in touch in the digital era. Furthermore, Mumbai was selected as the location of the 2024 conference. Congratulations ...

Dear APABI members: This is the final email newsletter prior to the September 22 conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. We look forward to seeing everyone, whether in-person or virtually! Many member countries are sensitive to the US economy, and trade is one of the most important channels. Will the US be guided by a philosophy of "near-shoring" or "friend-shoring?" From an American perspective, these two terms are similar, but the difference between them includes most of Asia. This debate deserves follow-up attention. Many of our members have held training ...

Dear APABI members: We’re very excited for the APABI conference which is scheduled for Mid-September in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – just three months from now – hosted by the Banking and Finance Academy of Mongolia. The theme will be “Reshaping the Banking Sector in the Post-Pandemic Era.” I believe that banking in every member country has undergone deep changes over the past two and half years, and this conference will be an opportunity for international exchange, allowing us to learn important lessons from each other’s experiences. Fittingly, the c...

Dear APABI members: Add a new term to your vocabulary: Blue Finance. The ocean contains the world's largest ecosystems, and is included in the 14th Sustainable Development Goal of the UN: "Protect the abundant ocean." An increasing number of entities are issuing blue finance bonds, and most APABI members have some economic connection to the ocean. This is an emerging area of finance to watch, and we have included an article on the subject below. Our Malaysia member AICB, in cooperation with the Global Ethical Finance Initiative, is holding the first Ethical Finance AS...

【2022】APABI_February
Dear APABI members: This is the time of year for the annual Davos summit. This year focused first on the issue of vaccination, which is an issue of concern for countries around the world - even if not domestically, then from a global perspective, due to the possibility of future variants. The economic recovery, meanwhile, has been "stronger than expected," according to Christine Lagarde of the ECB, and we hope this can be maintained, particularly in the face of geopolitical risks. At the same time, the green transition is receiving ever more attention. It, alongside the ongoing...

【2021】APABI_December
Dear APABI members: This is the final edition of our newsletter for 2021, which is the first year we have produced it. This has been a year of slow recovery from the COVID crisis. In fact, many APABI members, including Taiwan, managed to hold off the impact in 2020, only to be hit to various extents this year. We hope to be hearing less about this issue in the coming year. Meanwhile, several changes have affected the way the banking sector operates. Inflation has finally re-emerged as a concern. ESG finance has finally emerged into its own, playing an unprecedented role in the COP2...

Dear APABI members: This edition of the APABI newsletter features an interview with Mongolia Banking and Finance Academy (BFA). As you know, Mongolia will be the host of next year's APABI conference, so we are all interested in the conditions there. The conference will not be held in the early part of the year; further updates will be forthcoming in due course. Meanwhile, the interview revealed BFA's challenges with the transition to online instruction. Have you been having similar experiences? The Philippines, on the other hand, also featured in a separate interview, has been co...

Dear APABI members: This edition of our newsletter features diverse news items from a couple of our members. First, as part of our APABI interview series, Sweta Sud, Academic Director of the PNG Institute of Banking and Business Management (IBBM), describes the situation of the banking sector there in the wake of the pandemic. The whole economy will see major lasting changes. Meanwhile, Singapore is building on the efforts of both its government and private sector to make great strides towards a more sustainable future. Its combination of green finance with technology can serve as a mode...
